Staffordshire golf club targets ‘Most Welcoming’ title

A Staffordshire golf club is aiming to show that it offers the biggest, best and warmest welcome in England.

Branston Golf & Country Club, near Burton upon Trent, is one of four finalists for the England Golf’s Most Welcoming Club of the Year Award, sponsored by HowDidido.

They’ll find out if they’ve won at the England Golf Awards 2019, sponsored by adidas Golf, on Thursday 21st March. The glittering black tie event at the Royal Lancaster London will be hosted by BBC Breakfast presenter Dan Walker.

The appeal of Branston was summed up in its nomination by one member: “We drove in and that was it – a fabulous welcome, superb facilities, friendly folks, a terrific social scene, fine ale and great value – perfect!”

The club, which boasts a crèche, has just completed an improvement programme to benefit members and visitors. This included a new short game area, new targets on the range, major investment in green keeping equipment, and expansion of the gym and health club, including new bikes for spin classes.

There’s strong links with local community groups and the professional team has been in to 10 schools, introducing 440 youngsters to golf during 2018. As a result, junior membership is soaring.

In addition a weekly newsletter, a seasonal magazine and social media make sure everyone knows what’s going on.

“Pay a visit to the club and you can be certain that every member of staff, gym goer, parent dropping kids off at the crèche or golf club member will extend a warm greeting,” said Ben Johnson, England Golf’s Club Support officer for Staffordshire.

Branston’s rivals for the title are Burghill Valley Golf Club, Herefordshire; Exeter Golf and Country Club, Devon; and Horton Park Golf Club, Surrey.

England Golf Chief Executive Nick Pink commented: “These four clubs really know how to look after their customers. The welcome they offer to their members and visitors is outstanding and ensures that they keep coming back for more. Clubs like these are showing us the way forward and how to successfully grow the game.”

Tickets for the England Golf Awards 2019 cost just £90 per person and include a drinks reception and a three-course dinner with wine.
