New Beacon Parkrun sees nearly 700 runners take part

Tuesday 28th January 2020

SASSOT have recently funded the Lichfield Beacon Parkrun which got off to a great start as it’s first run in the park took place last month! Read all about the eventful day below …

After months of planning, Saturday 18th of January 2020 marked a huge day in Lichfield as a dedicated team of volunteers finally brought the first ever Parkrun to Lichfield – and almost 700 enthusiastic locals made it the second biggest ever inaugural event in Parkrun’s history!

A total of 689 runners braved the frosty conditions (a positively balmy 1.5C!) to run the course for the first time. Two laps of Lichfield’s historic Beacon Park, set in more than 70 acres of beautiful gardens in the heart of Lichfield’s city centre.

Saturday’s first finisher (and making history as Lichfield’s first ever Parkrunner to cross the line) was Toby Ury in 17.50, with first lady finisher Sarah Mackness completing the course 19.56. But Saturday’s event wasn’t just about the impressive times.

Parkrun is all about inclusiveness and wellbeing and we want as many people as possible to feel part of a real local community – and with 19.5% of those taking part in Saturday’s event Parkrun first timers (not to mention the many children, toddlers in buggies and dogs joining in), Saturday really was a demonstration of everything Parkrun was set up to do!

Beacon Park Run

It’s fair to say the buzz around Beacon Park was infectious on Saturday and the atmosphere was clear proof that fresh air and exercise can really help improve wellbeing. Check out some links below for anyone wanting to start running or needing some inspiration.

The benefits of exercise are well documented – and Parkrun isn’t about setting PB’s or racing against others. Just joining in whatever your pace or style … getting the trainers on and out the door is the hardest bit!

Once you’re on the course, there is so much support along the way and fellow runners/joggers/walkers (not to mention the enthusiastic and loud marshals) will give you all the encouragement you need.

So – onto those links.

Couch to 5k – a great way for anyone thinking about running to get started. The website can be found here.

An example of how running can help with wellbeing can be found here.

Now, Saturday’s event would never have got off the ground had it not been for the work of the incredible team of volunteers behind this, they were:

A huge thank you to our high vis heroes who provided incredible support to these runners. Special thanks to Lichfield District Council. Also thanks to Staffordshire County Council and SASSOT (Sports Across Stoke on Trent and Staffordshire) for helping to fund the set-up of this amazing event.

With an (almost … ) record-breaking number of first timers and huge proportion of first-timers joining in, we want to spread the word about Lichfield Parkrun – if you are interested in taking part, head down to Beacon Park 08:50am every Saturday.

And please remember that for this wonderful event to continue to grow and thrive, we rely on volunteers. So if you’re able to lend a hand, please email beacon@parkrun.com
