Freya thrives at ‘Let’s Get Physical’ project

Tuesday 21st May 2019

In September of last year, Lichfield District Council teamed up with Street Games to tackle inactivity levels in young people, through a project called ‘Let’s Get Physical’.

Street Games and LDC wanted to target young people that fell within a certain demographic, by supplying schools with taster sessions and subsequent after school clubs.

These clubs then ran for six weeks alongside community based multi-sports sessions which were based in two different locations; Life Church in Lichfield and Burntwood Leisure Centre.

One particular success story of Let’s Get Physical is Freya, who has thrived during the programme. Freya’s journey with LGP started through the sessions delivered at Life Church back in September 2018. Attending weekly with her older brother, Freya’s engagement levels during the sessions were low to begin with, due to a lack of confidence which meant she struggled to engage with children who were older than herself.

During the sessions Freya took part in a variety of different mini games including fortnight dodgeball, basketball and SERVES tennis. All the games were tailored to be inclusive, fun, energetic and allow the participants to develop skills such as coordination and communication.

Fast-forward to May 2019 and Freya is now one of the most prominent names on the session’s register that averages around 10 participants.

Health & Wellbeing Activator and session leader, Euan Scott says “Freya engages with all participants, coaches and volunteers who have all seen a positive change in her enthusiasm towards the sessions. Her bright personality shines through due to her enhanced confidence that the sessions seem to have given her. Freya has gone from not being able to take part in sessions to being one of the most outgoing participants and is always the first one through the door often beating the coaches to the sessions!”

In addition to weekly multi sports sessions, Freya’s active lifestyle has further developed with attending free tennis sessions in Beacon Park every Sunday!
