Friday 21st April 2017

The latest data shows that 55.5% of people in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent currently take part in no sport and 30% of the population are completely inactive.  Data does however show that 53.3% of people would like do more activity, 28.4% of whom are currently inactive.

So here’s what you’ve been waiting for as the month of May is jammed pack with a whole range of activities that have been specifically designed to provide a sociable and gentle introduction to different sports. Activities are informal, free or low cost and don’t require specific equipment or clothing – it is all about enjoyment for all ages and abilities.

Move More in MayMove More In May is a campaign run by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) to encourage inactive people to try something new. It aims to allay peoples’ natural fears about trying a new sport by focusing on activities targeting beginners and by promoting the message that these activities are fun, easy to do and will improve your sense of wellbeing.

Whatever our age, there is good scientific evidence that being physically active can help us lead healthier lives. Regular physical activity can reduce the risk of many chronic conditions, including coronary heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, cancer and obesity. Regular exercise can also have a profoundly positive impact on mental well-being by reducing stress, anxiety and depression.

Just some of the activities on offer during Move More In May include Beginners Running, Cycling, Go Canoeing, Footgolf, Push The Boat Out, Great British Tennis Weekend, Disability Football, Back To Netball, Health Walks and many more….

Our online activity search allows people to find out what is on in their local area as well as helping to answer some pre-contemplation questions such as “is this really aimed at beginners, how much it will cost, what should I wear, can I just turn up, can I bring the kids?”
