Move More In May – Reminder…Calling All Activity Providers
What Is It?
Move More In May is a campaign run by Sport Across Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent (SASSOT) to encourage inactive people to try something new. It aims to allay peoples’ natural fears about trying a new sport by focusing on activities targeting beginners and by promoting the message that these activities are fun, easy to do and will improve your sense of wellbeing. The month of May is jammed pack with a whole range of activities that have been specifically designed to provide a sociable and gentle introduction to different sporting activities. Activities are informal, free or low cost and don’t require specific equipment or clothing – it is all about enjoyment for all ages and abilities.
How Do You Get Involved?
If you are running an activity that falls in May or would just like to use this campaign as an opportunity to promote existing activities, please use our online calendar to add your event. This is quick and easy asking you several details about your event and we can then help to publicise your activities through various media channels.
Why Are We Doing It?
The latest data shows that 55.5% of people in Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent currently take part in no sport and 30% of the population is completely inactive. Data does however show that 53.3% of people would like do more activity, 28.4% of whom are currently inactive. This campaign aims to provide a clear, jargon-free offer to the public and a single information access point. This campaign also provides additional activity information which will help to answer typical pre-activity contemplation questions such as: Is this really aimed at beginners? How much it will cost? What should I wear? Can I just turn up? Can I bring the kids too?
Move More in May 2017
2015 saw the inaugural Move More in May campaign, with a new section on our website, a social media campaign via Facebook and Twitter, and coverage on three local radio stations. In 2016, 998 different sessions were listed on our Move More in May database, and we improved our media coverage. Our evaluation of the campaign so far has shown that those activities that were given detailed radio coverage reported a 50% increase in attendance compared to previous similar events, whereas for activities promoted through general coverage (i.e. not featured on the radio), an average of 13% of attendees find out about the session via Move More in May.
2017’s campaign will be even bigger and better, with an increased social media presence and ten Move More in May projects specially commissioned to link to the national This Girl Can campaign (see below for more information). This year, we are specifically focusing on activity appropriate for the target groups below, although any activity appropriate for beginners can be part of the campaign.
