Primary PE & Sport Premium

The PE and Sport Premium provides ring fenced money to primary school headteachers to improve the quality of the PE and sport activities they offer their pupils. The funding is currently worth £150 million per year and is provided jointly by the Department for Education, the Department of Health and the Department for Culture, Media and Sport.

Prime Minister David Cameron announced in February 2014 that the Government have committed to funding for the Primary PE and Sport Premium to 2020.

Schools must spend the additional funding on improving their provision of PE and sport, but they will have the freedom to choose how they do this.

Vision:

All pupils leaving primary school physically literate and with the knowledge, skills and motivation necessary to equip them for a healthy lifestyle and lifelong participation in physical activity and sport.

Objectives:

To achieve self-sustaining improvement in the quality of PE and sport in primary schools.
We would expect indicators of such improvement to include:

  • The engagement of all pupils in regular physical activity – kick-starting healthy active lifestyles
  • The profile of PE and sport being raised across the school as a tool for whole school improvement
  • Increased confidence, knowledge and skills of all staff in teaching PE and sport
  • Broader experience of a range of sports and activities offered to all pupils
  • Increased participation in competitive sport

We are working to ensure that primary schools know what’s available to them, both locally and nationally, and in partnership with Entrust and oPEn we are able to provide a support service to primaries to help maximise the use of their PE and Sport Premium Funding.

We have produced a Staffordshire & Stoke-on-Trent specific guidance document and have collated a number of other resources to support schools to maximise the use of their funding.
